When reading the first part of the chapter, it talks a bit about brands. I worked with Meijer for a short time, and they started as a small thrift store in Michigan. Meijer was competing against other grocery stores like Wal-mart and Kroger, among others. Meijer slowly gained in popularity and they have generated hundreds of stores in Michigan and Ohio alone. They have made themselves into there own brand. They competed against all other giant brand names and they are still growing.
stereotyping is another word that has come up in the chapter. When you see someone in the store dressed in all black and has spiked hair, you automatically have a stereotype about them. This is wrong for people to do but everyone does it. My cousin is one of these people whom wear all black. She asked me the other day if I knew of any place that was hiring. I told her of a few places that i might know of. But she said she has applied there but she said that cause she wears black, everyone already has a stereo type about her and what she is like. She is a sweet girl and it is not right not to even interview her because she dresses different or not up to certain standards.
Meijer was a small business at one point, but like you said have done a great job building their own name and brand. They have built a lot of trust with their customers over the quality, taste, and price of their own brand. They even get a lot of comment on how their brand is better than the name brand while still being cheaper. What's funny about store brands is that the sometimes are made by the name brand company and sold unbranded to the stores to make their own brands. This is especially true for batteries. So these companies make money off both their brand and off-brands, and they spend the money to make their brand seem better and longer lasting.
ReplyDeleteI was a little confused when you were talkign about brands. what exactly did the chater say about brands? You should have went into to depth more about mejiers brand of things. what do you think about it? Like for example me personally i will not buy off brand things when it come to certain items. i consider mejier brand to be off brand . you just didnt say much of your opinio basically. I did understand your take on stero types and you used a good example.
